Signs You Need to Contact a West Bay Shore, NY Chimney Repair Professional
A fireplace is a wonderful feature of your Suffolk County home. It provides reliable warmth, creates ambiance, and adds to the aesthetic appeal of your home’s interior. The chimney is a vital component of your fireplace, as it exhausts excess heat, smoke, and soot out of your house, and feeds fires with the oxygen they need to burn. Because it’s such an integral part of the fireplace, you know that yearly chimney cleaning and inspections are important; however, between routine chimney maintenance services, issues can arise that require immediate repair.
A damaged chimney is a serious fire hazard. To protect your Suffolk County home and your family, it’s important to be aware of the signs that indicate you’re in need of chimney repair services. Pay attention to the structure and if you notice any of the following, you’re going to want to schedule an appointment with a reputable West Bay Shore, NY chimney sweep that specializes in repairs.
Do you see white stains on your chimney? That’s efflorescence, and while the spots are fairly easy to remove, cleaning won’t resolve the issue that caused the residue buildup. Those white stains are a clear indication of a moisture problem. Efflorescence is a deposit of salt that forms when moisture is present in masonry materials, such as brick, concrete, or stone. As the moisture dries, the salt rises to the surface and leaves a white residue behind. If the moisture problem that’s causing the efflorescence is left unchecked, premature deterioration of the structure is likely to occur, on top of other moisture-related issues. At the first sign of white spots on your Suffolk County chimney, contact a chimney repair specialist.
Damaged Mortar Joints
Are the mortar joints between our chimney’s masonry damaged? If so, you’re going to want to call in a West Bay Shore, NY chimney sweep that specializes in masonry repairs. Mortar is the glue that holds your chimney together. If it deteriorates, not only will the structure be weakened, but the masonry will be exposed to moisture, which will accelerate deterioration and cause a variety of other problems. Ultimately, the entire structure could fall. Keep an eye on your chimney’s mortar joints. If they’re cracking, crumbling, or pieces are missing, schedule an appointment with a Suffolk County chimney repair company.
Are you having a hard time opening and closing your damper? Is your firebox covered with discolored spots or specks? If so, rust is likely to blame, and rust is a clear indication of a moisture problem. Water could be seeping through cracks in the mortar joints, through the bricks, or bypassing the chimney cap. No matter the cause, rust is just one of the effects that moisture can have on a chimney; it can also crack the flue tiles, damage the mortar joints, and ultimately, it could weaken the entire structure. If you suspect you have rust in your fireplace, call a reputable Suffolk County chimney repair company.
Crumbing Flue Tile
Have you seen piles of chimney tiles collecting in the bottom of your fireplace? If so, chances are your flue is damaged. This issue is known as shaling, and it can occur for a number of reasons, including moisture damage, poor installation, or simply age. Whatever the cause, it’s imperative to call a West Bay Shore, NY chimney sweep that offers repair services as soon as possible. A flue is a vital component of a chimney. If it’s damaged, the structure can become a serious fire hazard.
